I grew up with "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" on TV and read "The Silent World" in grade school, plus I live on an island in the North Pacific. I don't have a fear of the sea or sea travel. Hawaii can only be reached by ship or aircraft and the only way to get from island to island is/was to "float or fly." So I'm OK with boats, ships, and aircraft. I've heard of people who are afraid of travel by air. (A group of Hawaii grade schoolers visited China and had to calm the fears of Chinese students who had never flown in an aircraft.) Dark or murky water is better left until after sunrise so you can see…something below the surface. Underwater lights can help if the body of water is (somewhat) clear.
I'm shaking
